This report is from this week's CNBC's "Inside India" newsletter which brings you timely, insightful news and market commentary on the emerging powerhouse and the big businesses behind its meteoric rise. "This particular product, and broadly speaking, the domestic investor, has driven the upsurge in the Indian stock markets," Mahesh Nandurkar, head of India research at Jefferies, told CNBC. For instance, of the nearly 4,900 actively traded India-listed stocks, 300 stocks had a fall in revenue in the last two consecutive financial years. Foreign investors have historically had a significant influence on local equity markets. For now, the savings directed into equity markets are still a tiny proportion of the overall savings Indians put away annually.

That shakiness around when the cuts are coming, as well as the expectation that rates could remain higher for longer creates an opportunity for active managers. Rick Rieder, BlackRock's global chief investment officer of fixed income, told CNBC in a phone interview. Indeed, core bond funds were among the winners in the 2008 crisis. For starters, they should think about the role they want a given bond fund to play within their portfolio: Is it to offset equity risk or to boost returns? "You're not investing in bond funds to shoot the lights out and build your wealth pile," said Morningstar's Jacobson.

AI is very power-intensive — and its power needs are only set to rise in the coming years. Morgan Stanley Investment Management's Aaron Dunn says the "next big bottleneck" for the hyperscalers — which are doing a lot of the cloud computing for AI applications — is either power or fiber. And that's why Dunn is "pretty bullish" on utilities, naming one stock to play it: CMS Energy . "And so these utilities … have a very favorable opportunity to draw solid earnings growth and good returns for them," Dunn concluded. Their power consumption is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 11% through 2030, the bank said.

Direct air capture is already a growing business, and governments around the world are adding to it, providing tax incentives and grants to help spur the industry forward. Some of the first firms to do it, such as Climeworks and Carbon Capture, use massive fans in the process. "Every day there's a new article or a story or disruption taking place," Andrew Howard, a partner at Shamrock Capital, told Insider this summer about the firm's media strategies. Shamrock, which is based in California, pursues strategies in the private markets, mainly through equity or debt-based investments. Founded as a family office in the late 1970s for members of the Disney family, the firm has blossomed into an institutional investor exclusively focused on media, entertainment, and communications. Howard likened the speed of today's transformations to the dot-com arms race that defined the Internet landscape two decades ago. "We're coaching kids whose parents are running major studios and companies within media and entertainment," Howard said.

The logo for Morgan Stanley is seen on the trading floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., August 3, 2021. The plaintiffs said Morgan Stanley convinced them to invest about $281 million, but hid details of a Brightline preferred share transaction that should have required the loan be prepaid at a "make-whole" amount they estimated at $750 million. Morgan Stanley was also accused of having swapped out one document with the signature of a Certares affiliate, to make it seem like the affiliate had read and agreed to the preferred share transaction. In a statement, Morgan Stanley said "the firm does not believe the claims have merit and will defend itself vigorously." “Based on Japan’s experience in the 1990s, there is the risk that China is entering a liquidity trap due to the risks of balance-sheet recession,” said Natixis’s chief economist for Asia Pacific Alicia Garcia Herrero. Fan Gang, a prominent economist and former adviser to the central bank, told a forum in June that China faces a liquidity trap but not a Japan-style deflationary morass. Yet about 180 domestic A-share companies say in their stock filings that they have invested in CDs this year. China’s 220 million retail stock investors, equivalent to Brazil’s population and the biggest drivers of daily moves, have kept to the sidelines this year. “I wouldn’t pour money into the stock market any time before I see a clear rising trend,” he said.

Analysts see the same lack of confidence in today's Chinese households and companies that Japan grappled with in the 1990s. But in China's case there is a key difference; there is no deflationary threat yet, nor have banks switched off lending. Fan Gang, a prominent economist and former adviser to the central bank, told a forum in June that China faces a liquidity trap but not a Japan-style deflationary morass. China's policymakers have cut rates and encouraged banks to lend more in efforts to revive economic growth after the pandemic. China's 220 million retail stock investors, equivalent to Brazil's population and the biggest drivers of daily moves, have kept to the sidelines this year.
